Horseback Riding at Camp: The Ultimate Confidence Booster

Horseback Riding at Camp Jeanne d’Arc is an activity that goes far beyond learning to steer a horse — it’s a hands-on life lesson in responsibility, courage and trust. In today’s fast-paced, screen-heavy world, finding meaningful ways to help campers build confidence is more important than ever. And where else can you ride horses nestled between the Adirondack Mountains and Chateaugay Lake? Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

Here are some real-world ways that horseback riding at camp builds confidence in campers:

Responsibility That Feels Rewarding

At Camp Jeanne d’Arc, young riders quickly learn that horses are not just animals — they’re partners! From grooming and feeding to cleaning tack and learning how to saddle up, these simple tasks foster a sense of ownership and self-discipline that builds self-esteem. In addition, campers need to keep track of their riding gear – for some campers this is a true test of responsibility!

Building Trust and Learning Regulation

Horses are sensitive, intuitive animals that respond to energy and emotion. Forming a connection with a horse can support growth in empathy and patience, as well as emotional regulation. Campers love learning the names of each horse and discovering each horse’s unique personalities (watch out for Snickers!). These relationships help build campers’ inner confidence.

Improve Coordination and Muscle-Building

According to Oasis Day Camp in Long Island, horseback riding at camp is also a great way to get fit! Riding works muscles that campers don’t often use and require stamina, coordination, and balance. Campers become more confident in their physical strength as they become more proficient riders. Plus, carrying their helmets and boots from Woodsheart, across the Chalet lawn, down the hill, under the tunnel, to the barn helps build campers’ strength!

Mastering Skills Over Time

Like any sport, progress in horseback riding at camp comes with effort and persistence. Whether it’s mastering a trot, jumping a small fence, or simply learning to post correctly, every milestone met is a confidence booster. At Camp Jeanne d’Arc, when riders work to gain entrance into the Junior Ride Club or the Senior Ride club, they can even see tangible benefits of their efforts.

Performing in Front of a Crowd

As per long-standing tradition, at the end of each half, the Camp Jeanne d’Arc ride program puts on a horse show.  Campers show off the skills they have learned all summer in front of the camp community. Nervous riders strap on their helmets and mount their horses like usual, but now they need to perform in front of a crowd!  After successfully demonstrating skills at the horse show, campers gain a sense of accomplishment and pride as their fellow campers clap and cheer.

What a Gift!

Imagine how it feels when a Jeanne d’Arc camper mounts a horse on the CJDA horse show for the first time, trots around the bend in the arena across from Chateaugay Lake as their cabinmates wave and cheer! The fresh air, the new skills, the pristine views, and the CONFIDENCE!  Horseback riding at camp — what a gift!
