FAQs

Cabin Life:
How are cabins organized?

Campers are placed with girls who are approximately the same age and grade. Prior cabin groups are generally kept together; however, final placement depends on length of stay, age, grade in school, individual development and availability of space. Requests to be with friends are considered, but not guaranteed. In no case will sisters or cousins or friends from home who are in different age groups be placed in the same cabin. Final cabin assignments are not made until shortly before the campers arrive.

Travel:
How will my daughter travel to camp?

There are several travel options for campers. Some girls are dropped off by car, others take the camp bus (departing from NYC, Westchester County, and Albany), and others fly into nearby airports (Burlington, VT or Montreal, CAN) For campers arriving by plane, we will arrange for a staff member to meet the camper at the airport.

Staff Hiring:
Do you employ male counselors?

We strive to fill all our hired positions with strong female leaders; however, each summer we usually employ a few young men to support our female counselors in conducting activities. Our young men are very carefully vetted. Young men are never permitted in the cabins. There are several men and young men that work in the kitchen and on the maintenance crew. All employees are background checked.

How do you vet your employees?

Our counselors go through a series of interviews in order to earn their position as a staff member at JDA. They are carefully vetted through a series of background checks and reference checks from prior employers and family members. Only the very best are hired as staff at Camp Jeanne d’Arc.

Safety:
How can I be assured that my child will be safe from intruders?

Our biggest defense against intruders is training. We spend focused time during our pre-camp training, instructing our staff on how to identify an intruder and how to respond. Our campers are also given training upon their arrival. Our camp is small; we are like one big family. It is easy to identify someone who is not welcome at camp. In the event that we have an unwanted visitor on camp , we would begin our intruder protocol.

How can you assure me that my child will not be abused at camp?

Our top priority at camp is your child’s safety. We take our hiring process very seriously with mulitiple interviews and multiple reference check. We rely on industy experts to guide our abuse prevention practices. Camp Jeanne d’Arc is proud to be a leader for abuse prevention in the camping industry.

Food:
How are meals served at camp?

Meals are served family-style at camp. Trying a variety of foods is encouraged. Meal time etiquette is expected. Campers are assigned tables for meals and rotate frequently to get to know all the campers at camp.

What will my daughter eat at camp?

We have an awesome full-time kitchen staff that prepares three hot meals a day. The menus are full of kids’ favorites like pizza, tacos, hamburgers, and chicken. Of course we know that kids like choices, so we always have yogurt, fruit and cereal (available at breakfast), as well as a salad bar in the afternoon and evening filled with many delicious and healthy options. We are capable of accommodating your daughter’s special dietary needs such as vegetarian, gluten-sensitive, lactose-sensitive and nut-sensitivities. Please contact us to further discuss your daughter’s special dietary needs.

Faith
What does “faith” mean at Camp Jeanne d’Arc today?

With over 100 years of history and tradition, Camp Jeanne d’Arc brings together the magic of sleepaway camp with the timeless values of Jeanne d ‘Arc (Joan of Arc): faith, endurance, courage, and confidence.

Faith takes many forms—belief in yourself, trust in family and friends, and, for some, a spiritual connection. At Camp Jeanne d’Arc we are happy to provide opportunities for personal spiritual reflection and growth, including Sunday Mass, a non-denominational gathering, and mindfulness activities—ensuring that every camper can find meaning in her own way. In addition, campers may choose to:

  • Sing grace at mealtime/and sing a song of prayer at the close of campfire
  • Participate in a camper-selected gratitude or prayer at the close of campfire
  • Campers may choose to write in her reflection journal
